Fact Check Friday-“The Hidden Truth About Abortion Pills.”

We're Back!

After a short break, Fact Check Friday is returning every other week to address today's headlines and dig into the facts behind the stories. Today we take a long look at the online abortion pill and how to Reach Her First.

The Debate in Washington.

Several states with strict abortion laws are currently holding hearings at our nations capitol. The rise of online abortion pills trafficked into those states has raised alarms. Even the strictest laws have not prevented predatory abortion providers from reaching women searching online for abortion. The hearings reveal the degree of igornance about the risks of medical abortion and the lack of clarity around authentic healthcare in America.

The debate over reproductive choice is no longer limited to the morality of abortion or the standing of the unborn child. We now must consider the impact on women’s health and the high risk of “choice” in America. The recent removal of medical oversight and common-sense guardrails from online abortion pills has left women more vulnerable than ever. Predatory providers are now able to separate her from health care and offer no recourse when an abortion leads to adverse effects. The debate supporting women's health is in a collision course with the real-world reports of hospitalization, abortion failure rate, and psychological harm. It’s time to Reach Her First.

Facts About Online Abortion

  1. These Drugs Harm Women

Nearly 70% of all abortions now utilize abortion pills, making it the method of choice to end a pregnancy. The abortion pill causes serious, documented harm. Independent insurance claims data reveals complications far more frequent than the FDA acknowledges (see below). The FDA’s own adverse event reporting system is broken — the agency stopped requiring reports, then claimed the drug was safe based on the resulting silence.

2.   Mail-Order Abortion Removes Every Safeguard

Mailing these pills with no in-person doctor supervision eliminates every basic safety check: no physical exam, no ultrasound to rule out ectopic pregnancy or confirm gestational age, no physician present if the woman hemorrhages. Online availability also enables coerced abortions and leaves women completely alone during a dangerous medical event.

3.   Predatory Websites Target Young Women

Women making pregnancy decisions search online for answers. Their search will reveal over 65 websites eager to sell abortion pills online. Without a pregnancy test, prescription, or doctor visit, literally anyone can order pills if they have access to a credit card. These predatory and deceptive sites are outspending us with aggressive and targeted advertising. It’s time for us to Reach Her First.

We Must Reach Her First

For over 40 years, Network of Life has been reaching those most vulnerable to abortion to spare the pain of abortion while rescuing the lives of their children.

Our medical staff and services support both mothers and babies. Both deserve excellent health care. We have an obligation and an opportunity to reach women who are searching online for answers. To accomplish that, we must reach women first.

"Reaching Her First” includes community education, awareness, and a marketing campaign to specifically reach women searching for abortion pills online. Network of Life’s medical pregnancy centers provide face to face medical care, provide free ultrasounds, and empower women and men with the truth about abortion pill risks.

The Campaign: How Will We Reach Her

1.   Advertising campaign directed at those seeking abortion pills online

2.   Community education focused on churches and youth

3.   Fundraising to support the entire campaign

1.Client-Facing Ad Campaign.

  • Today there are over 65 online abortion pill providers competing to reach a woman searching online. To reach her first, we must carefully outspend those predators in the digital marketplace.

  • We've increased our ads budget and added a second Google Ads Campaign targeting those seeking abortion pills online.

  • We'll also improve our “ground game” strategies that promote our services on local campuses. These include 1,000 swag giveaways, local campus kiosks, handouts, etc. with trackable QR code contacts.

2.Community Education.

  • Printed and video resources are being created to tell the story and summarize the dangers and risks of abortion pills.

  • Stories from those who've been harmed by abortion pills are being collected. Those stories are strategically published and shared with legislators in websites, in emails, etc. These stories are graphic, painful and horrendous so read with care. See those stories here.

  • Several strategic leadership events have been planned for those working directly with students. The first event is Monday, March 30. Click the button below for details.
