Who is this for?
For those approaching or past age 73. One must begin taking the RMD by April 1 of the year following the year one turns 73.
What is it?
Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) are the minimum amounts that must be withdrawn
annually from certain retirement accounts such as traditional IRAs, once the account holder
reaches a specific age, now age 73. The RMD rules apply to all employer sponsored retirement plans including profit sharing plans, 401k plans, 403b plans, and 457b plans.
Why give the RMD to a Charity?
Think about what matters to you most. What impact do you want to make? By giving your RMD directly to a qualified charity, you fulfill your IRA withdrawal requirement without paying income tax on that amount. You also reduce your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) which helps withMedicare and Social Security thresholds. It also lets you make the maximum gift possible to the charity with the least tax impact on you. The charity gets the full amount, IRS sees it as
satisfying your RMD, and nothing goes on your 1040 form as taxable income.
What are the steps?
The transfer must be handled directly by your IRA administrator directly to the charity with you
receiving a statement of the exchange. This ensures the transfer is reported accurately. The
RMD is calculated by taking the account balance as of December 31 of the prior year and
dividing by a life expectancy factor from IRS tables (Pub 590-B).
