Someone asked me recently to describe a “normal” client. After thinking for a moment, I had to admit that there is nothing routine about our clients or the circumstances they face. And even though there are common cultural obstacles, we treat each client as unique. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with her?” we must ask, “What has happened to her? How has her past affected where she is today?”
This week we met Sherrie, a sweet young woman who was accompanied by her wonderful boyfriend. When the pregnancy test indicated “positive” there was a complete shift in her mood. Our expert staff began to explore Sherries story and looked beyond the surface to what had happened to bring her to this point. Sherrie had been trafficked as a very young teen. Exploitation, drug abuse, and two abortions were part of her nightmare past. After breaking free and finding stability and health, she was now revisiting the guilt and regret of her past. Our team had an extraordinary opportunity to extend the hope and healing that only Jesus can provide. She began to weep as some deep issues were surfacing. Immediately she asked to see her sonogram. “I need to bond with this baby,” she said, “I need to see him.”
Her story reminded me of the story of Hagar, in Genesis 16, who is pregnant, cast out, and left to die. An angel visits Hagar and says, “Where have you come from and where are you going?” God meets Hagar in the wilderness and protects her unborn son. In the midst of her struggle, she recognizes God’s help, “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
Sherries journey has just begun but she now knows the God who sees her and loves her. Thank you. Your support and financial giving help us to meet the needs of our “not so normal” clients each and every day. Babies are saved and lives are transformed!
Gratefully, Amy Scheuring, Executive Director
